The Beauty of Your Face Shape

A Guide to your Perfect Pairing

We’ve all been told to avoid certain styles for our face-shape. When it comes to modern beauty standards, things can get very one-size-should-fit-all.

Every feature has been categorised, and we’re constantly encouraged to neutralise ourselves into fitting the “ideal standard” ... the totally arbitrary standard.

But we all have our own unique beauty about us - something we should celebrate rather than treating our features hierarchically.

So let’s explore the distinct beauty of each face shape. And remember, pretty much every face could fit into more than one shape category!

Oval Face Shape

Lupita Nyong’o Bella Hadid Beyonce

The oval face shape is often considered the most versatile, as it has been the current beauty standard for a while. If you're blessed with an oval face, you can experiment with a variety of hairstyles without looking too different. If you’re after suggestions, consider soft, layered styles or long waves that highlight your cheekbones and jawline. You’ll also look amazing in upstyles!

Round Face Shape

Gigi Hadid Miranda Kerr Ice Spice

First of all, round faces don’t get the love they deserve! Look at how cute Gigi Hadid’s round face shape is, perfectly complimenting her features in a way a longer face and stronger jawline just couldn’t.

If you were blessed with a round face, you may have heard to avoid overly rounded or excessively short styles, as they can accentuate the roundness of your face. But we disagree!

For example, Afros look amazing on this face shape – think Ice Spice’s cherub-like look with her round halo of curls. And Florence Pugh is another gorgeous example of embracing a shorter style on a round face.

If you do want the illusion of added length to your face, you can choose hairstyles that add volume and height, such as long wispy layering. Layering around the face can give you that cheekbone angle that you may not have. But don’t forget how beautiful the even proportioning of your face is to the eye!

Square Face Shape

Paris Hilton Angelina Jolie Olivia Wilde

A square face is another one that doesn’t get the love it deserves! Characterized by a strong jawline and a forehead of similar width, square faces have probably been told to slim down the jaw with longer lengths, or avoid leaving the jaw exposed in an upstyle.

But if you’ve got a strong jawline, you should flaunt it! Paris Hilton and Angelina Jolie both have square faces with wider jaw-lines, and their strong facial structure only adds to their beauty. If you’ve been blessed with a squarer face, start embracing the gorgeous facial structure you naturally have and flaunt those angular features!

If you’re still on your journey to loving the strength of your features, face-framing layers or waves can soften angles, while still accentuating your strengths. Soft waves and volume can also create more curves around the face, softening the overall look. But we love seeing more angular faces flaunt that natural facial structure!

Heart Face Shape

Zendaya Reese Witherspoon Naomi Campbell

A heart-shaped face has the broadest point at the forehead, tapering down to a pointed chin. Think Christina Ricci’s Wednesday Addams. If you’re lucky enough to have a heart-shaped face, shoulder-length cuts, soft curls, and textured bobs look incredible on your face shape. Accentuating that heart-shape structure can give devastatingly gorgeous Hollywood glam vibes. Think glam waves or a bouncy blowout that frames the face in cascading waves. Stunning.

If you’re not a fan of your wider forehead, you can rock a side-swept bang to lessen some of the width. But don’t forget how gorgeous and sought-after your face shape is! The grass is always greener…

Diamond Face Shape

Megan Fox Halle Berry Kim K

A diamond face shape is slim at the chin and forehead, with the widest point at the cheekbones. If you’ve been blessed with a diamond face, you’re gonna wanna accentuate those gorgeous cheekbones! Half-up half-down styles look stunning on this face shape, as the cheekbones are in the spotlight, while you can decide how much face-framing you’d like.

If you’re not quite ready to embrace the diamond, and you want something more “balanced” instead, choose hairstyles that add width at the forehead and chin while softening the cheekbones. Side-swept bangs or layered styles with volume at the crown are also excellent choices for diamond-shaped faces.

Long Face Shape

Kelly Rowland Liv Tyler Cher

If your face is on the longer side, you’ve probably been told to add width and volume, and avoid straight long styles. However, you can’t deny that super long hair looks goddess-like on long faces – think Morticia Addams, or Cher!

If you don’t want to accentuate your face shape, opt for a haircut that adds layering around the cheekbone, or hairstyles with layers, waves or curls to exaggerate the width around the cheekbones and create the illusion of a wider face. Shorter haircuts look great on this face shape too! Bangs are a great way to shorten the face if wanted.

So basically…

By embracing the unique beauty of your face shape and features, and choosing the right hairstyle to complement them, you can enhance your natural beauty and boost your confidence. Experiment with different styles, consult with a professional hairstylist in Brisbane, and most importantly, have fun expressing yourself through your hair! Remember, the perfect hairstyle is not about following trends but creating a look that resonates with your individuality and highlights your best features.
