Investing in YOU: Why training and education is important for hairdressers
I always get asked the question: “What do hairdressers do at business courses?”
As the owner of Ella & Jade Hair and a creative hair stylist, it’s no secret that I absolutely love what I do, the culture we’ve built and the way we’ve grown with Australia’s ever-changing hairdressing landscape.
Building a business and my own hairdressing career, I always speak of the importance of education and training.
Your talent and skills certainly don’t stop when your apprenticeship does, and that’s why education is a key pillar to our culture and success at Ella & Jade Hair.
The hairdressing industry is constantly evolving with trends changing every season, new and innovative products and tools coming to market which help build the client experience and your skills as a hairdresser.
Most recently, our head of education, William Webb and I trekked across the world to the bright lights of New York City to take part in the first ever ANTI ALLY business program.
It was an incredible two-day course, which was all about understanding us as leaders, our values and our why, and then how we use this to grow and develop our team.
We were encouraged to present a TED talk on what we did well in business as too often we focus on the negatives. We then got to hear and share ideas and concerns with other like-minded business owners.
We then worked backstage alongside Hair Director, Renya Xydis, for Zimmermann's SS/20 runway show; another incredible experience.
Being involved in productions like fashion week really opens your eyes to a whole other side of our industry.
The part that I love the most is being able to bring these skills and techniques back to our team and then share with our clients.
This way we can speak to our clients from a place of fashion, which a lot of other salons can’t.
These experiences are priceless for creatives and I highly recommend mapping out your year, and investing in your skills, career and always transforming to be the best hairdresser and business owner you can be.
